As chaotic as life is for the average person in this fast-paced, demanding society, it is difficult to plan ahead. Unfortunately, this concept is particularly true when it comes to family meals. To remedy this issue, many people turn to fast food and eating out to accommodate the lack of time. However, eating out consistently costs a great deal of money, and can be unhealthy over the long run. Fortunately, it is possible to make healthy family meals on a budget, regardless of time restraints. Doing so will put healthier food in your family’s bellies and save money to boot. Below are a couple of simple elements for making healthy family meals on a budget.

Find Recipes That Work and Stick With Them

There are many resources to find healthy family recipes that can be put together on a budget. When you find a recipe that stays within your price range and your family likes it, save it. Simply repeat this process for any number of recipes you see fit. By saving the recipes that work, you will create your own cookbook of familiar choices, making it easier to plan the meals.

Plan Meals Ahead of Time

When working with healthy family meals on a budget, planning ahead is crucial. Planning allows you to go to the grocery store at the beginning of the week and buy all the items you will need for a week’s worth of meals. When you become familiar enough with the recipes you want to work with, you can use a prepaid credit card each time you shop to make sure you stay within budget and easily keep track of your spending.

Superhero for the Day

Everyone loves to dress up and pretend they are someone else for a day or an evening. Adults, children, and teens all get into the spirit when it comes to choose their favorite “someone else” to be. Costume parties are gaining popularity, and not just for Halloween.

Kids costumes are becoming big business. There are all kinds of elaborate costumes available for kids who want to be a superhero for the day. Whether they choose to be Batman, Superman, Spiderman or their favorite Power Ranger, kids love to get into the spirit of dressing up. Costumes range from the simple to the very elaborate with all the accessories that can be imagined. Hats, wands, weapons, special effects, and masks are all accessories that can be added to that perfect outfit.

There are various places that costumes can be found for costume parties. There are many sites on the Internet, which is very convenient if consumers live in an area where costumes are nonexistent or limited. Arts and crafts stores also stock costumes and costume kits as well. Although they may not contain the latest and newest costumes, thrift stores are an option as well for purchasing costumes.

Costumes are a fun way to express someone’s creative side. They can be a great tool to act out a favorite fantasy or dream job such as a superhero for the day. A costume is only as creative as the creator. It is an exciting time to plan a costume party or a costume for a party.

Coops and Other Uses For Your Home

You may be wondering what other use there can be for chicken coops than housing chickens? Well, where do the chickens go to roost at night and to lay their eggs? And, where do they deposit a great deal of the natural “fertilizer” they supply? That’s right, in there.

If you are allowed to keep chickens in the area where you live, you are going to be amazed at how easy and fun it can be. Sure, it takes a little time and work, but if you keep your chicken population at a manageable size (between six to eight chickens), it won’t be that hard.

As mentioned earlier, chicken coops are designed to give chickens a place to roost at night as well as seek shelter from predators and extreme weather conditions. In addition, laying boxes are placed either inside or on the outside of them, so that the hens can have a place to deposit their eggs.

They must be cleaned often as the smell from them can be rather unpleasant. However, you can purchase ready-made ones that are easy to clean, or you can simply fix the floor to where it is easy to remove the “fertilizer.”

If you have a backyard garden, you can use the “fertilizer” you remove from the chicken coops to help your plants grow. It is natural, so you don’t have to worry about introducing harmful chemicals to the soil. If you don’t have a garden, ask your local agriculture agent how to properly dispose of the droppings.

Speaking of backyard gardens, not only do the they provide the “fertilizer” for it, but the inhabitants of said coops also act as natural insect controllers. If you have problems with the chickens wanting to eat the plants as well as the bugs, simply put chicken wire around your garden. The chickens can still catch the pests, but won’t be able to get to your plants.

When you’re on a cruise, you don’t have to be confined to your room. There is cruise entertainment for all of the guests at all times of the day and night. There is no way you should be bored while you’re on your cruise. Once you get unpacked, you can immediately get something to eat or look at your itinerary to check to see what time a show may start. When it comes to cruise entertainment, there is something for everyone.

You won’t go hungry when you eat on the cruise. When you order your meal, the staff makes sure that you get enough to eat until it’s time for you to eat again. In fact, you might even want to try a buffet. When you’re finished eating, you can go lie down in your room, enjoy a show or try out the casino. If you decide on a show, cruises allow the guests to become part of the entertainment by letting them come on stage.

If you want to enjoy your own cruise entertainment, you can go swimming in one of the pools located on the ship, have a massage in your room or in the spa, or go golfing. You can even learn how to do things you might have never tried, like rock climb. If you have children, the ship has an area just for children to entertain themselves while the adults have their own space.

At night, you can go to a live show while the kids are with the babysitter. Some cruises even offer child care for parents. The cruise ships usually have dancers, singers, actors, and live bands to entertain the guests. The shows that they offer are top notch, and the entertainment is one of the best that you’ll ever experience.

Kitchen Tips and Tricks

Whether you love to cook, hate to cook, or simply cook because you have to, everyone could use a few extra tips when it comes to navigating the kitchen. Here are a few I’ve learned through my cooking adventures.

Take Off Your Jewelry

Not only will removing your expensive Tacori ring or Guess watch while cooking keep them free from food particles, it will also prevent losing parts in your food. Say for example you are kneading some bread dough and one of the diamonds from your ring becomes loose. You’ve not only ruined your bread because you’ll be tearing it apart to find the diamond, but you have also ruined your ring.

Always set a Timer

Even if you don’t know how long something needs to bake or boil, make sure you set yourself a timer. This will simply remind you to check on the cooking food, rather than allowing you to forget about it and ruin your dish.

Follow the Directions to the Letter

We’ve all tried to improvise a dish or have simply skipped a step on accident, and it’s really hit and miss on whether the food will turn out or not. Be sure that if it’s your first time trying something, you follow the directions carefully. After you’ve pulled it off a few times, then you can try and make it your own by changing things up.

Make Your List, Check it Twice

We’ve all been in the middle of cooking something and then realized we are missing a key ingredient. Then you have to try and beg your neighbors for the missing item in the hopes you can salvage your meal. So, whenever you want to cook something, write down a complete list of the ingredients, check your cupboards, then go shopping.

I hope these tips help some of you out. Happy cooking!

My Favorite Kitchen Appliance: The Food Processor

A Cuisinart food processor

If you don’t have a food processor in your kitchen, then you are doing way too much work to make meals for your family. My Cuisinart food processor is my favorite kitchen appliance. Other than the stove, it gets used more than anything else. What’s so great about a food processor? Let me count the ways…

Food processors make it really easy to chop vegetables. You can chop up an entire carrot within seconds. The same goes for pretty much any other vegetable that you can fit into the feed tube. Press it into the blade and it literally gets sucked into the food processor with no effort at all. This makes it extremely simple to include more vegetables in your family’s meals. Not only will you be able to fit into those old Baby Phat jeans, but your whole family will benefit from a healthier diet that helps them lead longer, happier lives.

A food processor also makes it easy to fix dishes that you would otherwise avoid. Making pesto with a mortar and pestle might be the traditional method, but it gets old quickly. The same goes for making hummus. Instead of pounding and grinding away at chickpeas for half an hour, you simple drop your ingredients into the food processor and let it do the work.

My food processor is also easy to clean. It’s dishwasher safe, so I rarely even have to clean it by hand unless some bits of pesto get stuck in the blade. Any cook without a good food processor can’t make all of the meals that he or she wants. If you don’t have one, then you need to put it on your Christmas list right now. That way you will be able to whip up some great meals for next year’s holiday parties.

How to Become a Vegetarian

There are many ways to improve your diet and get healthier. Although you can use food dehydrators on your food or cut down on fatty and starchy foods, one great way to eat a better diet is to become a vegetarian. However, becoming a vegetarian is a difficult process that does not simply happen overnight. There are a few things you will need to do in order to successfully become a vegetarian for life.

You will need to start by eating a lot of different vegetables and having variety in your diet. If you go from eating meat regularly to simply having the same plate of vegetables every night, you will quickly get bored and will want to give up. You should also realize that giving up meat itself can be difficult. Indeed, some people can find it as difficult as giving up smoking or drinking. You may need to ease yourself into a vegetarian lifestyle and eat meat one less night a week for a few months.

Learning about vegetarianism is a great way to get started as well. Read books by nutritionists and other vegetarian cook books to get ideas for recipes. You should also read up on ways to get the necessary vitamins and minerals you need from other sources.

Another thing you will need is dedication and will power! Becoming a vegetarian can be difficult, but if you take small steps and gradually change your diet then you will feel the benefits. You might also want to tell the people around you about your new choice of lifestyle. It can be especially hard if you are sitting with a group of people who are eating meat while you are trying to give it up. Letting them know that you are a vegetarian will help you avoid circumstances like this where temptation may get the better of you!

Healthy Eating in Nursing Homes

In some situations, it may seem out of your hands for you to eat healthy, but this does not always need to be the case. In many situations, individuals can eat healthier even when they are unable to control their own meals. For people living in nursing homes, it may be difficult to get the quality of meals they want and need to have. If this is the case, it is necessary to do something about it. Studies show that those who eat nutritious meals low in calorie can extend health and life.

Making Adjustments

There are many instances when it becomes necessary to make adjustments in diets to meet the health requirements a doctor has established. The person living in the nursing home may be gaining weight or not getting enough calories. These are instances when improving a diet will improve the overall health and lifespan of the individual. Here are some ways to discuss this with your nursing home facility.

  • Discuss options. In short, if the facility is not willing to make adjustments to suit your dietary needs, consider finding another facility. There are many that can provide a better diet.
  • Discuss fresh food options. Those facilities only offering frozen-dinner-type meals are unlikely to be providing the level of nutrition necessary. The more fresh food in the diet, the more nutrients enter the body.
  • Determine whether there are options for improving quality, such as eating more vegetables and consuming fewer simple sugars.

If you are facing health consequences due in part to your diet, making changes can have an outstanding effect on health now and for the future. If you find it difficult to convince nursing home staff to work toward your goals, get your doctor involved, as well as your loved ones. Improving a diet can be an excellent way to improve quality of life and to help you extend your life.
